Shepparton Art Museum (SAM)

The Shepparton Art Museum, or SAM to friends, sits alongside Bendigo and Geelong galleries as a cultural destination. This modern art museum rises from the shores of Lake Victoria by the Goulburn River.

It is recognised for its significant Australian ceramics collection, and its nationally significant collection of Indigenous art. SAM includes four galleries over two floors and is home to travelling art exhibitions, the biennial Sidney Myer Fund Australian Ceramic Award and the national Indigenous Ceramic Award.

Sitting opposite the sprawling main gallery is the chic yet casual SAM Café, the doorway framed by a small glass gallery of porcelain from the gallery's collection. The dining room looks out over the water with a sheltered courtyard merging onto a grassy bank, ideal in good weather. You could brunch on a vanilla bean pancake with homemade boysenberry ice cream or have a fillet of crisp-skinned barramundi with sweet potato crisps.
